Swimming Raft Fun For Everyone

Swimming Raft

A swimming raft has always been a great addition to the cottage or home on the lake. In many cases folks simply pull them out and anchor them for the season. What is particularly great about rafts is it gets all the activity away from the docks to a somewhat safer environment. Rafts are generally made for jumping and diving off of while many docks are not.

Swimming Raft Construction

Originally a swimming raft was built using what was at hand. Most people simply used logs as the flotation medium with some sort of lumber decking. Over the years they evolved using barrels and billets and upgrading them to with beautifully finished decking and floating rails.

The Challenges

Each flotation system has advantages and disadvantages. A barrel set up using the heavy plastic barrels (as apposed to steel barrels) can be relatively inexpensive if a person has access to free or nearly free barrels. The downside to using these for a swimming raft is they sit way to high out of the water. They are also very difficult to maneuver. Attaching barrels and find a close place to build it, can also be an issue. Billets are a better option however they are a single purpose float, meaning you cannot expect to be moving them around much once they are in place. A swimming raft using barrels or billets should be removed from the water over the winter.

Using Pontoon Floats

This year we are offering another solution that overcomes some of the inherent issues using regular billets or barrels. We manufacture pontoon floats that can be used to make a multifunctional platform. Your raft can now be substituted as a barge, fishing platform or dock extension. Using our pontoon floats you can maneuver your raft just like a boat. You can anchor it out front and bring it into the shore when finished.
Our pontoon floats are designed to withstand ice conditions so there should be little concern about wintering them in the water.

Floating Bridge

Floating Bridge

A Floating Bridge can be a very small or indeed very large as seen in the Washington state.
The greater Puget Sound area is home to five of the world’s floating highway bridges.
The Washington state Department of Transportation has begun building the $4.6 billion successor to the 520 bridge already considered the longest floating span in the world. This will give traffic a safer and less congested cross-lake trip between Seattle and Medina.

Floating Bridges and walkways

With environmental concerns about disturbing natural habitat floating walkways or bridges are showing up in cities and communities all over Canada. It is pretty common for a community to want to capitalize on their waterfronts to attract visitors and encourage local residents to get out and enjoy the scenery.

ATV Floating Bridge

Nobody appreciates a floating walkway or bridge more than outdoors enthusiasts traveling in the back country on an ATV. Structurally sound and stable these additions can make what could have been a disastrous day to a world class outing. Check out the floating 300 foot board walk we built to cross an impossible swamp on the Trans Canada Trail System. Come Spring this fills up with water making the walkway free floating,

  • 300ft Floating Bridge over Swamp Area
  • Floating Bridge and board walk used on the Trans Canada Trail System

Vehicle Traffic

In most cases (Seattle being the exception) traffic bridges are solid structures meant to last a generation or more. A floating structure does have a role however, when talking about a temporary or remote seasonal crossing where in is not practical to build a conventional structure. A floating access way can be transported as manageable pieces and assembled on site very quickly.

ATV Barge and Part Time Dock

ATV Barge

Every hunter and fisherman knows the challenges of getting an ATV across a body of water. Regardless of how small the impasse is, if the water is too deep you are not driving across it.
There are boats on the market that will make a great barge. The problem is they are very expensive and cannot always be taken into remote locations.

atv barge

ATV Barge with Pontoon Floats

If you are thinking of a making a barge consider using our manufactured pontoon floats. They provide excellent flotation and durability. They can be constructed to accommodate a single ATV or several ATV’s. Since we manufacture them we can make them to any length you require. They can be built to accommodate a small motor which makes them very maneuverable.

ATV Barge Profile

For do-it-yourself projects you usually have to build around what you have. If you are fortunate enough to acquire a used set of pontoon floats, then that is what you use. Unfortunately there is usually a compromise between getting adequate flotation and having too much flotation. Second-hand floats that had a past life supporting a house boat, air plane or pontoon boat are usually too big for what you really want. Once built, they make an excellent Barge, however, they sit high off the water which can make getting on and off a challenge. They are also difficult to maneuver and require a pretty good engine to move them around in the wind. Getting into shallower areas can also an issue.

ATV Barge Floats

Our manufactured floats come in two profiles. The smaller profile is 12″ high by 24″ wide. The larger profile float is 22″ high and 24″ wide. The attachment points can be arranged so that the deck is laid down as low 1 1/2 inches above the float. This makes for a nice low profile which is easy to get on and off of.

Let us help you with your special project. We can deliver a dock or floating platform to you as a turn key product, or a series of parts and pieces that you can assemble yourself.

All of our pontoon floats can be custom made to match your project need. Whether it’s 6 feet or 60 feet we can deliver an economical solution to your project.

With the versatility our floats bring to your project,  your floating pontoon docks can be used for rafts or other floating platforms that can have many uses.

Pontoon Docks Using Large Capacity Floats

Our 22″ high x 24″ wide float can be employed on docks requiring more flotation and height off the water. Like the 12 inch float, this typically comes in a 16 feet length, however, they can be made longer or shorter to match your requirements.

Typically these bigger pontoons are used for commercial applications or the cottage/home owner with a larger boat or special need.  If you are considering a boat house or floating building these make an excellent maneuverable floating support.

Dock Flotation Calculation. Getting the Right Floats

Facebook Logo

Dock Flotation Calculation

It is always important to be comparing “apples to apples” when doing a dock flotation calculation.

Dock Flotation Calculation: The Richardson Advantage

Our pontoon floats run either the entire length or width of your dock or raft. Without any gaps, flotation is consistent giving more stability, strength and buoyancy. A single sixteen foot (12″x 2′ x 16′) float has 32 cubic feet of foam medium. Our larger float (22″ x 2′ x 16′) has 58.7 cubic feet of foam medium.

Dock Flotation Rule of Thumb

Regular dock floats they will support 65 pounds per lineal foot. Considering an 8ft x 16ft dock has three 16ft floats it will support 3 x 16ft x 65lbs = 3,120lbs. The actual dock will weight by itself 10.5 pounds per square foot. Using the same example 8ft x 16ft x 10.5lbs = 1344 pounds. So the net weight an 8ft x16ft dock will support is 3,120 – 1344 = 1776 lbs.

Our Large Pontoon Floats (22′ x 24″ x 16ft will support 130 pounds per lineal foot. Considering an 8ft x 16ft dock has two 16ft floats it will support 2 x 16ft x 135lbs = 4,320lbs. The actual dock will weight by itself 11.5 pounds per square foot. Using the same example 8ft x 16ft x 11.5lbs = 1472 pounds. So the net weight an 8ft x16ft dock will support is 4,320 – 1,472 = 2,848 lbs.

Air Filled vs Foam Filled

An air filled device and a foam filled device have just about the same flotation characteristics sitting dry. Add moisture in the form of condensation or a leak, and everything changes. Water displaces air and if enough gets in it will not support itself. In other words it sinks!
Using foam within the flotation device displaces the water up until the point of saturation. In other words it becomes water-logged.
So – then it becomes an absorption issue of the foam.

Dock Flotation Calculation Absorption Issues

Absorption rates of foam are calculated as a percentage if its total volume exposed to water. In other words, it is not a percentage of the entire float, just what is exposed to the water. So the less flotation you have, the more your float will be under water. You can see, more flotation is better than less. Always look at the flotation data sheet for water absorption percentages.

Dock Corner Brackets

Dock Corner Brackets

Dock corner bracket should be considered in every dock building project. Typically they are used in at least the four outer corners of the dock, however they should be considered at every structural joint intersection.
dock corner brackets

Galvanized Dock Corner Brackets

Dock corner brackets are either made of 1/8 or 1/4 in bent plate. If you are using 2″ x 6″ construction materials you would consider the 5″ x 6″ bracket on the inside or a 5″ x 8″ bracket on the outside. At Richardson Docks we like to use the heavier 1/4″ galvanized plate on all the inside corners. You should always consider using galvanized brackets and galvanized nuts, washers and bolts. They will last for ever and always look good over time. Square backing plates are a good idea especially if you are not using carriage bolts.
Dock corner brackets can also be found as a joining bracket combination. These obviously would be bolted to the outside corners of two adjoining dock sections.
When you are using dock corner brackets on the inside cross pieces you can get away with 2″ galvanized angle brackets. These can be lag bolted as apposed to regular bolts.

Dock Corner Brackets as Attachment Points

Dock Corner Brackets
When we build a dock or raft that we want to put a transom on we like to employ an eye bolt in place of one of the regular bolts. This can be used as a safety tie for the motor.
In addition to this you can also consider attaching an anchor bracket to the one of the dock corner brackets.

From an engineering perspective dock corner brackets used through out will prevent your dock from racking and flexing causing corners to want to pull away. They also give that additional strength required when attaching larger boats or aircraft.

At Richardson Docks all of our do-it-yourself packages come with the appropriate dock corners and attaching hardware. We pre-drill the holes so all you have to do is bolt it together. For more information on our DOY project see our dock projects page.

Dock Billets

Dock Billets Limiting Uses

According to one Ontario resort owner dock billets are “okay but not very functional”. The problem with dock billets says Sharon Provencher at Lake Lauzon Resort Algoma Mills Ontario is that they are for a single use only. If you use enough of them they provide good flotation, however you would never think about maneuvering them around for other uses. At our lodge we want visitors to be able to go out and use a “pontoon dock” as a roomy fishing platform one day and a swimming raft on another. We can throw an electric motor on our platform and away we go. At the end of the day we position it sideways on the end of our stationary dock where it provides an excellent wind break for parked boats.

dock billets vs pontoon floats
22 inch high floats are excellent for larger boat docks

Dock Billets Winter Storage

Most dock billets are not designed for ice conditions. This means cottage and home owners have to remove their docks and store them over winter. This can certainly be a challenge on uneven shorelines where space is limited.

Building with Dock Billets

The biggest mistake people make when building docks is underestimating their flotation requirements. It is a natural instinct to want to spread them around to maximize the coverage and minimize the expenditure. The result is uneven flotation and instability. The better way to go is to calculate your need and build to that specification. Unbroken perimeter flotation is hard to beat. Going big; simply use larger floats or add a third section down the middle.
Dock Billets are often sold at price points attractive to low budget projects. While this may prove cost effective on the front end it won’t be long term. If you are going to use dock billets insure they are foam filled using a high density product with a low water absorption rate. These are definitely more expensive than the air filled dock billets, however the added expense is well worth it.
